PRESS RELEASE

MOSOP Welcomes Inauguration of Central Representative Advisory Committee (CRAC), Commends Hon. Minister for Environment

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) welcomes the eventual set up of the Central Representative Advisory Committee (CRAC) and is pleased with its composition and successful inauguration by the Honourable Minister of Environment, Surv. Hassan Zarwa at the Ministry’s Headquarters in Mabushi, Abuja, on Monday, April 8, 2019.

Speaking at the occasion, the MOSOP President, Comrade Legborsi Saro Pyagbara stressed that with the inauguration of this critical structure, the communication and engagement gap between HYPREP and the communities will now be fully bridged. He also stressed that the CRAC structure will also facilitate the deepening of Ogoni community involvement in key decision making and implementation process of HYPREP thus ensuring a win for the communities.

The MOSOP leader also congratulated all members of the Committee and thanked them for accepting to serve in voluntary capacity on the platform for the benefit of the Ogoni people. He charged them to remain focused and result-oriented for the attainment of the overall objective of remediating the Ogoni environment.

“MOSOP believes those nominated to serve on the Committee will commit themselves to the service they are expected to render and to consider the interest of the people above personal and other concerns. It is our expectation that the positive views, good counsel and collective opinion of members of the Committee will be respected by handlers of the project and relevant authorities working on it”, Comrade Pyagbara stressed.

Speaking further, the Ogoni leader highlighted that the CRAC was one of the key demands of MOSOP during the negotiation process for the reform of HYPREP to ensure the creation of a structure situated at the local level to enhance community engagement, dispute resolution, awareness creation and information sharing. He reiterated that the Movement has vowed not to allow the compromise of set principles and standards that would guarantee the successful implementation and completion of the clean-up exercise in Ogoni or any part of the Niger Delta.

It would be recalled that the CRAC was the outcome of the Ogoni negotiation in 2015 and embedded within the gazette guiding the implementation of the Ogoni Clean-up programme. The CRAC is thus set pursuant to Paragraph 24 of the HYPREP Gazette. The main functions of CRAC amongst others include: to establish and maintain a primary contact between HYPREP and the communities; interface with all the stakeholders; communicate progress of the project, including employment and business opportunities to the community and address grievances from the community.

Prominent amongst other participants at the CRAC inauguration were the MOSOP President, Comrade Legborsi Pyagbara, HYPREP Coordinator, Dr. Marvin Dekil, Gbenemene Tua-Tua Tai, HRH, Chief Samuel Nnee and Prof. Ben Naanen.
